Ingredients:
- 2 cups of heavy cream
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 3/4 cup of granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 ounces of dark chocolate, chopped
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions:
1. In a medium-sized saucepan, heat the heavy cream, whole milk, sugar, and cocoa powder over medium heat. Stir continuously until the mixture is smooth and the sugar has dissolved.
2. Add the chopped dark chocolate to the saucepan and continue to stir until it has melted completely.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks until they become lighter in color.
4. Slowly pour about 1 cup of the hot chocolate mixture into the whisked egg yolks while continuously whisking. This step is essential to temper the eggs and avoid scrambling them.
5. Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
6. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
7. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until it is completely chilled.
8. Once chilled, pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions.
9. Transfer the churned ice cream to an airtight container and freeze for at least 4 hours or until firm.
10. Serve the homemade chocolate ice cream in bowls or cones, and enjoy!
